How To Join St. Barnabas
United Methodist Church

Why Join The Church

"Why should I join the church?" "What value is there in church membership?" Such questions are sincere, honest and deserve to be answered. As Christians, we are called on to continue the ministry of Jesus Christ. While it is possible to do this alone, Christ wants us to share in ministry with others. The purpose of membership in a local church, then, is to help each of us

  • grow in our relationship with Christ,
  • learn more of what it means to be a Christian, and
  • help others find fulfillment in Christ.

The church is a community of believers. It supports, encourages and nurtures each member as the community seeks to promote the cause of Christ. To effectively witness to Jesus, the church depends on each and every member; when one suffers, all suffer. When one rejoices, all are glad. We come to church to worship God, grow in faith and knowledge of Christ, and to gain strength for reaching out to others in Christ's love.

How To Join The Church

Those desiring to unite with our church may contact the church office or come forward at the invitation given at each worship service. The following are key to the membership vows each is asked to take.

  • Do you profess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
  • Will you be loyal to the United Methodist Church, and uphold it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service?

Persons are received into membership in one of the following ways:

Profession of Faith and Baptism - Those who have not received Christ before, have never been baptized, or have never joined a church.

Transfer of Membership - Those with a membership in another congregation.

Reaffirmation of Faith - Baptized Christians who have no active membership in a congregation.

Affiliate or Associate Membership - Often part-time local residents who wish to retain membership in their home church. Affiliate members are United Methodists, Associate members have membership in churches of another denomination.
